Undergraduate Research Journals

Beta Beta Beta society offers members and non-members the unique opportunity to publish their undergraduate work in the pages of its journal, BIOS. "Membership in TriBeta is NOT required for publication in BIOS. Subjects covered include articles on current research, developments in biology, biology as a profession, as well as graduate and professional training for biologists. Special emphasis is placed on the publication of undergraduate research papers." BIOS is published in March, May, September, and December.

The Columbia Undergraduate Science Journal (CUSJ) "is a professional-level, open-access science journal that is committed to publishing manuscripts of the highest scholarship resulting from significant scientific research or outstanding scientific analysis." Any full-time undergraduates in the U.S. may submit papers.

The Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science (DUJS) "prints science news and review articles written by its staff and research papers by undergraduate students. The journal accepts submissions year-round. We have expanded our audience and will consider publishing research by undergraduate students outside of Dartmouth as well."

Since 1983, the Eastern Oregon Science Journal (EOSJ) has provided a unique opportunity for undergraduate science students to publish results of their summer internships or faculty-sponsored research. The EOSJ welcomes any submission of research done principally by undergraduate students in the sciences. At least two faculty members or experts knowledgeable in the field of the paper must sign the submitted paper, attesting to its scientific clarity and written accuracy.

"EvoS Journal: The Journal of the Evolutionary Studies Consortium is a journal designed to promote the education of evolutionary theory in colleges and universities. An evolutionary education provides a framework for enhancing the research and theory in all disciplines, and as such, EvoS Journal welcomes work from all academic disciplines as well as interdisciplinary scholarship that incorporates evolutionary theory across areas of study. As an outlet for academic articles, EvoS Journal has two particular aims. The first is to publish peer-reviewed articles related to evolutionary theory in higher education. The second is to publish undergraduate peer-reviewed publications that have arisen from courses offered through Evolutionary Studies Programs."

"We are an international journal dedicated to showcasing undergraduate research in all fields of microbiology. Fine Focus will consider publishing original research articles, mini-reviews on topics of contemporary interest, and research notes over abbreviated work that adds to the greater body of knowledge in a specific subdiscipline of microbiology. Fine Focus is published twice each year – in January and July. Manuscripts are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. However, to be considered for each volume, the submission deadlines are October 31 (for January publication) and April 30 (for July publication). If interested in publishing in Fine Focus, at least one co-author must be (at the time of manuscript submission) an undergraduate student actively engaged in research over which the paper is written."

IMPULSE is the first international, online neuroscience journal for undergraduate publications. Submissions are reviewed by students worldwide under faculty guidance, and articles are immediately published online as they are accepted. "The primary aim of the International Journal of Exercise Science is to engage undergraduate and graduate students in scholarly activity as authors and reviewers as they develop into professionals. In addition to providing students with an outlet for manuscript submission, the Journal will engage students as peer reviewers, thus providing students with a more encompassing experience with regards to scholarly activity. All student authors who have a manuscript accepted in the Journalwill be added to the reviewer pool and may have the opportunity to serve as a peer reviewer on future submissions."

"Intersect is an international Science, Technology, and Society research journal run by undergraduate students at Stanford University. It welcomes undergraduate, graduate, and PhD submissions at the intersection of history, culture, sociology, art, literature, business, law, health, and design with science and technology. The journal's submissions are not exclusive to Stanford affiliates and generally span several continents."

IN VIVO is a peer-reviewed journal that is published three times yearly during the Fall, Winter, and Spring. Original research articles in the field of biology in addition to original articles of general interest to faculty and students may be submitted to the editor to be considered for publication. Manuscripts can be in the form of a) full length manuscripts, b) mini-reviews or c) short communications of particularly significant and timely information.

"The Journal of Science and Health at The University of Alabama (JOSHUA) is an undergraduate research journal. We accept articles from current undergraduate students." Priority is given to research conducted at the University of Alabama, but students from other institutions are welcome to submit their research also.

"The Journal of Experimental Microbiology and Immunology (JEMI) is dedicated to the publication of undergraduate research results in fields related to microbiology and immunology." Papers are published online as they are accepted.

"The Journal of Undergraduate Chemistry Research at Virginia Military Institute is a peer review journal that is published quarterly with papers of original research performed by undergraduates on all aspects of chemistry including analytical, organic, inorganic, physical, polymers and biochemistry. Authorship may be by the student or their professor."

JUNE is an online journal for undergraduate neuroscience faculty that publishes peer-reviewed reports of innovations in undergraduate neuroscience education. JUNE serves as a mechanism for faculty to exchange information regarding topics such as laboratory exercises, new media, curricular considerations, and teaching methods.

"The Journal of Young Investigators is dedicated to representing undergraduate research in biological/biomedical sciences, physical sciences, mathematics and engineering, psychology and social sciences. We accept submissions of original research articles and literature review articles from undergraduate students." Published monthly.

"MarSci is an inter-institutional venue for publishing undergraduate research manuscripts pertaining to the marine and aquatic sciences. MarSci is looking for diverse submissions from any student at any institution. Future issues will feature research manuscripts, posters and abstracts, student articles, words of advice from faculty members, and upcoming deadlines and events (undergraduate research programs and student-friendly conferences)."

The Penn Bioethics Journal is the nation's premier peer-reviewed undergraduate bioethics journal. To submit a paper for consideration, the author must be an undergraduate student at a nationally accredited institution and have a faculty member sponsor their submission. Papers can be reports of empirical research or novel syntheses of previous work in science, philosophy, public policy, or any other discipline addressing an issue in neuroscience or neurotechnology. Term research papers are also encouraged. Additionally, each issue of the journal features one or more interviews with prominent professionals in fields related to the issue theme.

"PennScience is a multidisciplinary undergraduate research journal published by the Science and Technology Wing at the University of Pennsylvania." Students may submit papers from any field of life or physical science.
